Fish oil is the oil extracted from the tissue of oily or fatty fish. Fish oils are derived from fish like salmon, trout, sardines, herring, tuna, cod, mackerel and anchovies. Fish oil contains the useful polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, which are of 2 types- DHA or docosahexaenoic acid and EPA or eicosapentanoic acid. The omega-3 fatty acids lower the level of triglycerides in the blood. They also lower the blood pressure by reducing the production of the blood coagulating chemical, thromboxane A2. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils have anti-inflammatory properties. They prevent irregular heartbeats by reducing the abnormal rhythms of the hearts. The omega-3 fatty acids have been found to increase the amount of good cholesterol- HDL in the body. |
