Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil supplements have undoubtedly been growing in popularity these day’s and this is because they offer a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids. These Omega 3 fatty acids have proved to reduce the risk of getting a heart disease, thereby improving the functioning of the brain and eyes, they maintain a healthy immune system and also help you to ease your diabetes symptoms. The oily fish like salmon and mackerel are found to be the best natural source of these crucial fatty acids, but there is also a lot of controversy that surrounds the quality of fish that we buy these days. Consuming fish oil supplements is an excellent way to get some omega 3 acids and specially if you are not a fish eater and worry about consuming fatty acids. However, all the fish oil supplements are not the same and consuming the wrong supplement might prove to be unsafe and so it is important that you choose the best quality of supplement.

The first thing that you should look for in good quality fish oil is the active intergradient that they contain. There are generally three different omega 3 fatty acids and the first two DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are found in cold water fish like the Mackerel, Tuna and Salmon.  The third omega 3 fatty acids is called the ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and is mostly found in dark green leafy vegetables, flaxseed oils and a few vegetable oils. The ALA acids in the flaxseed oil do not contain much of EPA and DHA but contain the precursor to EPA and DHA in the form of ALA acids.

The fact is that fish oils contain two important omega 3 fatty acids the DHA and EPA. As both these fatty acids are include important nutrients you should look for fish oil supplements that contain a higher concentration of EPA acids. Most of the fish oil supplements include more of DHA acids and so you might have to shop well for EPA acids. You should also look for other nutrients and vitamins like Vitamin E and Vitamin A that are included in a few fish oil supplements. However they might prove to be harmful if taken in large quantity and when they are used in certain medical conditions.

When you search for fish oil supplements, try finding out where the fish comes from. Most of the quality supplements would include a label that would tell you where they come from. Heavy metals like mercury pollute the water and the natural environment which in turn affects the fish. These metals are very unsafe and can be found in a few fish oil supplements. So, it is important that you get a supplement which uses fish from the unspoiled waters.

However, just because the fish comes from clean water, it does not mean that you should assume that it is safe. The fish oil supplement should be free from all the dangerous chemicals as it should be molecularly purified to remove the additional impurities. You must buy a product which has a pharmaceutical grade and a product that lists in the pharmaceutical grade which would prove to be free of potential dangerous chemicals.
